I (briefly) dated a girl in high school who was a paraplegic, so a physical disability is not a dealbreaker for me. A mental/intellectual disability would be, of course, but if I am already attracted to her and think she's sweet and compatible with me, I won't care if she gets around in a walker or wheelchair. One of my best friends has CP and is in a wheelchair a good portion of the time. He met my other best friend at my birthday party and they are dating now:) he also tends to get a lot of girls in general maybe bc he’s such a sweetheart.

I used the search bar and couldn't find anything about it, so hopefully it's not a repeat.

I'm 18, and have a neuromuscular disorder that's classified as moderate to severe. At this point I can still walk, horseback ride, kayak, canoe, and swim, but I will slowly lose my ability to do such things as I age (yaaaayyyy). I've never really been self conscious about it until recently. I told my ex and he became afraid I would 'break' and couldn't touch me any more (awesome).

So, would it honestly weird you out/turn you off to know that a perfectly normal looking girl is going to slowly lose her ability to walk?

Dating Someone In A Wheelchair

Hi guys!! So I have some pretty heavy medical stuff going on right now (I wont go into so much detail unless asked) and I have to have back surgery very soon to corrected damage from a herniated disc. I do have a HUGE scar tissue problem which I am hearing will become a huge problem after surgery, possibly losing the loss of legs. I am already a single mom and I do not date much (I will only date someone if I feel a connection with them, it is the number one thing I look for in a man) I am concerned that my unknown illness and now possible wheelchair outcome will leave me forever alone. I don't want to worry about it, but it does suck being alone and I would like to have a relationship again one day. What are your thoughts in dating someone in a wheelchair?

Edit: So it seems like there is a good mix of yes and no. I do appreciate all of your thoughts on this, thanks for responding! Off to bed and crossing fingers tomorrows appointment with the neurosurgeon goes OK.

Edit 2: Waking up and saw this has blown up, thanks again for all who responded. I see there are many questions regarding sex. From what I am told, sex would not be an issue since it isn't now. Genital nerves are much lower down than where my injury is so sex is still game, thank god!!

Edit3: Back from neurosurgeon. Despite 3 different docs saying surgery was needed right away due to MRI results (the radiologist, my primary and neurologist) the neurosurgeon doesn't even see a herniated disc or any pinched nerves (reason I went to doc originally) He told me I was OK and do not need to worry (even though I am still having troubles which are becoming worse every day). I am thankful I wont have to decide on surgery or not today, but yet plan to get a second opinion just to be sure.
